July 2 marks the halfway point of 2022 and it’s not that far away. At this point, arguments have been won and lost, deadlines have been missed and met, people have succeeded and failed, parties have been mediocre or great party.pro/book and many, many ideas have been tested and either not worked or iterated on until they did.
So, this is a great time to take stock of where your life design is at and decide if the design working or not? It won’t take long. You might even have a scorecard or milestones for the goals you have either achieved or not.
If you don’t have any of that here’s How to Start Designing Your Life.
Designing your life could be the most exciting thing you could undertake, especially if you are in a rut or if you feel things are not going as well as you expect.
Here’s an example from the book, Light Your Own Fire, I’ve co-authored with Charles Donoghue. Teens are a cunning bunch, they carefully design their lives and have have been known to get what they want by using devious means. A young man had just passed his driving license. He asked his father, who was a minister if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we’ll talk about you getting the car.”
After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss the use of the car. They again went to the father’s study where his father said, “Son, I’ve been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve studied your Bible diligently, but you didn’t get your hair cut!”
The son replied, “You know Dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair….” To which his father replied, “Yes, and they WALKED everywhere they went!”
If you really want things to happen in your life then the first step is to take immediate control of your life by having a plan, not a wish list, but a REAL plan. You need to become a designer of life. If you don’t design your own life, watch out, there are those who are just waiting to drop you into their plan for you. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”
Although there’s a big difference between just thinking about where you are going, drifting through life, and designing a life. We all know of people who go through life with every step preplanned. They knew which university they would attend, which work would lead to a successful career etc. Unfortunately, this never works out as planned. And anyway, if you know the winner before the start, where’s the fun in the game?
At this point in your life, regarding what you have lived and experienced so far as a learning course and a rehearsal. What changes do you want to make now that you are ready to make them? What are you prepared to give in order to gain something. What would you do if you knew that you couldn’t fail? Focus on eliminating negative thoughts or self-criticisms that may impair your ability to develop strong creative thinking. Brainstorming with others is easier than going it alone. It’s a common technique in both academic and professional settings, but it can also be a powerful tool for developing your creativity. Start writing down related ideas and possible solutions. The goal is to generate as many ideas as possible in a relatively short span of time. Next, focus on clarifying and refining your ideas in order to arrive at the best possible choice.
If you want a more fulfilling life, one that gets you excited when you awaken each morning and makes you want to get on with your life, then start down the creative road today. Make a list of what might at this point in time seem to be impossible. Do your homework, and talk to people you admire for their achievements. Write to a few successful people and tell them what you aspire to achieve and ask for some input.
Make this deciding moment exciting. Light your own fire and launch yourself!
Have a great week.
