di-TUR-muh-NAY-shuhn. An explanation and why you need it

Robert Hughes said, “A determined soul will do more with a rusty monkey wrench

than a loafer will accomplish with all the tools in a machine shop.

A good example of this for me is a top disc golf player playing with one or two discs will generally still beat a beginner with a full bag of discs.

Let’s start with defining determination. It is a firmness of purpose or resolve. You approach something with the intention of finishing it.

I like the sound of the word – determination! If you say it a few times quickly, go on, it sounds like it means, DETERMINATION. Or you will start to sound like a Dalek from Doctor Who!

So why am I going on about determination?

Because, determination forms part of the foundation for our success. It can be seen in every successful person from Jonah Lomu to Valterri Bottas.

If you have a problem, GREAT!!

Why? Because with every problem you tackle and overcome with a positive mental attitude, you become a better, bigger (maybe not physically), more successful person.

There are many ways to say determination. Pick one that suits you and use it. Put it up somewhere on a post-it note. I HAVE GRIT! I AM COURAGEOUS!

Here are a few more I found; backbone, boldness, bravery, certainty, conviction, dedication, drive, energy, fortitude, guts, heart, nerve, persistence, pluck, purpose, resolve, self-confidence, spunk, stubbornness, tenacity, valor, willpower. You get the drift.

One idea, followed by action, can turn a failure into success.

So, if you have a problem, put aside time to think about it.

Write the problem down, analyse and clearly define it.

Say to yourself, “Great, I have a problem! Now what?”.

Now, ask yourself specific questions like; What’s great about this problem? How can I turn this great problem into an even greater opportunity?

Now the challenge – keep asking yourself positive questions until you have an answer that will work. Five whys will help here. Google the five why system to see how it works.

Be bold and brave this week and watch the difference a bit of determination will make to each day.
