We all love the idea of word-of-mouth advertising. They told two people, and they told two people, and so on.
It’s free, powerful, and really works when it works.
But here’s the problem: it hardly ever works.
Because word-of-mouth only works if people remember you, your product or service, and how you made them feel.
And they won’t remember to …
Unless you remind them.
That’s why this idea fits so well into my core email marketing philosophy, Email with Purpose. You’re aligning your email marketing with a business goal – getting more word-of-mouth.
If you’re not staying in touch – especially through email – you’re relying on memory, and memory fades fast.
Think about it.
Do your customers remember exactly what they bought from you?
Do they remember your business name, your location, or even how to describe what you do?
If the answer is maybe, then word-of-mouth is already failing you.
But if you send consistent emails, you remind people that you exist, do what you said you’re going to do – stay in touch – and remind them what you offer.
You make it easy for them to recommend you.
You stay top-of-mind, so your name actually comes up when someone says, “Do you know someone who…?”.
That’s how you engineer word-of-mouth.
Don’t leave it to chance.
Email with purpose. Stay in touch. Be remembered.
