20260120 - Nobody Cares About Your Excuses

Tom Brady is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time.

Seven Super Bowl rings.

Countless records.

Yet, his story didn’t begin as a superstar. In fact far from it. It began sitting on the bench.

Brady recently shared that during his first year at Michigan, he had what he called “self-defeating attitudes and behaviours.”

He had an excuse for everything.

“The coaches don’t want me in there.”

“I’m only getting three reps.”

“I’m stuck with the backup receivers.”

Then, every Tuesday, he would meet with a sports psychologist named Greg Harden. Harden listened to him for a while and apparently said:

Tom, I like you. You work hard, but you have a shitty attitude.

Not exactly the encouragement Brady was expecting.

Then came the lesson that changed his life:

Start worrying about what you can control. If they give you three reps, do the best you can with the three you get. Quit complaining. No one cares.

That must have been hard to hear. Most of us believe our progress is being held back by someone or something else.

Our boss.

Our partner.

The economy.

Our upbringing.

Our circumstances.

And sometimes those things are real.

But eventually, life asks a simple question:

“What are you going to do with what you’ve been given?”

Three reps.

An average job.

A difficult relationship.

A setback.

A second chance.

Whatever is in front of you today is your practice field.

Brady said he began treating practice like the game. For example, if he threw a touchdown in training, he celebrated. In treating practice like a game, his energy changed. But even better, his attitude changed.

And then, his life changed.

You may never win a Super Bowl. But you will be remembered for how you showed up.

Not your excuses.

Your effort.

Your attitude.

Your contribution.

Because one day, nobody will ask how many reps you got. They’ll ask what you did with them.

This Week’s Motivator
