Are You a True Friend?

20260609 - Are You a True Friend?

Because of the frailties of human nature, there is no such thing as a perfect friendship.

But there is such a thing as a true one.

True friendship isn’t built on convenience or proximity. It isn’t just turning up. It is built on something deeper, unselfishness, understanding, and love. A connection of the mind, not just the moment.

The self-centred person approaches every relationship with one question: what’s in it for me?

What will I get from this? What results will it bring? What benefits will come my way?

A true friend asks a different question entirely.

What does this person need from me?

They build a bond through forgiveness, kindness, and understanding. They see faults and weaknesses in the other person, and instead of judging, they help them through. That is the spirit of real friendship.

Cicero, the Roman orator, wrote:

“Friendship makes prosperity brighter, while it lightens adversity by sharing its grief and anxieties.”

I think that’s the test.

Does your friendship brighten the good times and soften the hard ones? Does it help the other person feel more capable, more understood, more themselves?

When you take the focus off yourself and place it on someone else, you stop being a passenger in their life and become a contributor to it.

That’s a rare thing. And worth being.

This Week’s Motivator

Be the friend who gives first.

Choose understanding over judgement.

Be forgiving. Be patient. Look past the faults and focus on the person.

The friendships that last are the ones where both people quietly help each other become better.

Prompt for the Week

Am I a true friend to the people in my life, or am I mostly focused on what I get from the relationship?

This week, I will choose one person and act with more kindness, patience, and unselfishness towards them.
