Why Motivation Doesn’t Last Long

After reading an inspirational or motivational book, hearing a motivational speaker, or completing a training program, people can become very excited and enthusiastic!!

However, in almost all cases, the enthusiasm wanes within four to six weeks, and their suddenly newfound excitement disappears. There might be the odd blips as they remember their excitement, but even those eventually stop. And just like that, they’re back to their old self.

Why does this happen when the author or speaker was more than likely (but not always) excellent and very successful?

Hence, today’s topic is, why does motivation not last?

The reason for this conundrum is that the human mind is programmed at a very early age or by late teens, and most of the programming is negative. Yes, it really is.

This programming restricts the achievement of human potential.

As a result of this disinformation, the person develops a very limiting belief or expectation of themselves and performs accordingly for the remainder of their life. This is regardless of their occupation, whether they are a dentist, a manager, a clerk or a salesperson, unless they are fortunate enough to learn how to reprogram themselves.

It is almost like someone deciding to refurbish their entire home because they want a new type of living. They are fed up with the old style. It doesn’t do much for them.

So they move all their old furniture into the garage to look at a major change by purchasing new and exciting furniture and fittings. Over the next few days, and before they can refurnish the home, they look around at the bare rooms and bring back in at least a few chosen items to fill the void.

First, it is a picture. Perhaps then a chair, and before you know it, everything is back as usual.

Do you get the picture? Why do they do this?

The old stuff feels more comfortable and familiar. This is why many people with good intentions never keep their New Year’s resolutions or achieve the goals they set for themselves. Nor targets set by management at work.

How does this relate to the human mind?

It is important to remember that a person will always perform and relate to others consistently, with the picture they hold of themselves to be true.

If that picture has no limitations and is full of positive expectations for their future, they can achieve almost anything. On the other hand, if their picture is limited, they will be restricted in their achievements and relationships until a major change occurs in their belief system. A change which requires that person to reprogram the human computer called the brain.
