Today’s MondayMotivator: Timely words from Epictetus

Posted by Spike MondayMotivator

Good morning.

If you’re in Auckland you’ll be starting the day at Alert Level 3. Yippee! Not 🙁

I have to say the sunset last night was amazing out my way and it somewhat ameliorated the news… somewhat.

I’m reading the Daily Stoic and a few days ago the meditation of the day had this quote from Epictetus that I think is timely.

“Keep constant guard over your perceptions, for it is no small thing you are protecting, but your respect, trustworthiness and steadiness, peace of mind, freedom from pain and fear, in a word your freedom. For what would you sell these things?”

Stoic meditations like this can help make it easier to bear situations like this and manage our reactions to them. For example, how are you reacting to the news today?

Are you happy?

Are you sad?

Are you frustrated?

If you are acting out I hope that it is making you feel better? It won’t. But maybe, like my daughter said after having her camp cancelled again, they missed out last year too, she just had to let some tears out. It made her feel a little better. Now, not long after, she’s moved on and asking me if she can write the MondayMotivator for me. Interesting prospect. I’ll keep you in the loop with that idea.

So, moving forward. We’ve been here before and even Jacinda said ‘we’, that is Aucklanders, know what to do.

Whether that is working from home, wearing masks or the kids off school. There are opportunities for exercise – make sure you do this – and an opportunity to question your thoughts and reactions and wonder where they come from.

I’m optimistic that we will get through this year without too many disruptions. You could read that as distractions from your goals too.

So, this morning remember what Epictetus said, keep guard over your perceptions and you will get less distracted, power through disruptions and make this the great year it should be.

Fan láidir.
