YourMondayMotivator: Rain. Lots of it. And why things should run off your back like water.

Why let things stick. Why not let them slide off, like water off a duck’s back.
This morning it poured down in Auckland. After such a long time without rain, even in the Waitakere’s, the ground was rock hard. So hard the water flowed off it and couldn’t soak in and do some good.
The water running off the hard clay at our house reminded me of a shell – with cracks. Nothing was growing and the grass that had held on for over the past month was dying. Except the Kikuyu.
It got me thinking about water off a duck’s back and why we should develop an oily layer or a shell. We let things stick? Things, habits, thoughts that shape us and are very hard to shake in later life. We do this because we haven’t formed a shell. A layer of resistence to negativity or doubt.

I think we can form this from quite a young age if we have the right people to model ourselves on. This role is generally performed by parents and the shell is sometimes called self-esteem or self-confidence.
This is really important. If you have kids under seven you are helping them form the patterns they will follow for the rest of their lives. You are building their shell and their ability to shake things off.
The questions I thought of to ask myself; Are you doing the best you can do? Or are you putting your own stuff/baggage onto your child? Am I aware of what habits she is forming and are they ones that will stand her in good stead?
There’s probably lots more but it’s interesting because as adults in a community we will come in contact with lots of children. What will their interaction with us be like and will it have a postivie effect on their lives?
This applies to adults you meet with, or have coffee with, or employ, or buy things off. And the secret is you can make a small difference with a smile, a thank you or a show of appreciation that might be something that person holds on too and drives them to improve their life. Think about it for a minute …. I bet there is something someone once said that shaped your life to some degree.
Lots to think about this week. Have a great one and remember to let things slid off you like water off a duck’s back.
