We are what we repeatedly do



This is a time we will never have again, I hope, where we can work on ourselves and form habits that will replace the ones that aren’t working for us.Full TranscriptGood morning. So, I can’t remember what day this is. Maybe it’s day seven. We’d been at home for a while with the kids. So, it feels like a lot longer. But look, this is a great time to be doing work on yourself. This is an amazing time to be doing work on yourself. This is the time I wrote in my Monday motivator. You’ll never probably have this abundance of time again.So look, one of my favourite quotes, it’s misattributed to Aristotle, but basically it’s Will Durant in his book the Story of Philosophy. He wrote, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit.”And we are the product of our habits. So this is the time to really think about the habits that you want to form. If you go through your day for the next couple of days, so the next couple of days, go through your day and just note down stuff that you do on autopilot. How you get up in the morning, what you do when you first get up, how you brush your teeth, how you get dressed, how you get your mind prepped for the day. What do you read first thing in the morning?Just start noting those things down. Do you read The Herald the first thing in the morning? Do you read The Guardian? Do you read whatever? That’s bad news going into your head. Right from the very beginning of the day. So, if you start looking at these habits and you get to the end of the day and you’re tired, you’re grumpy, you’re not full of energy, you don’t have a good night’s sleep. Everything you’ve done during the day is leading you up to that, right?So, we are what we repeatedly do. So, think about that. Think about what habits are going to get you to feeling energetic all day, to having a good sleep every day. Sleep, my friends and I, we call sleep our superpower because there’s a great Ted Talk on that actually. But sleep is your superpower. So, you need really good sleep.So think about, over the next few days, write down what you’re doing or just make a note of habits that you have in place now and note the ones that are working for you, note the ones that aren’t, and start replacing the ones that aren’t working with you, with ones that will. You might need to do some reading. You might need to do some real soul searching and some thinking about what you want. But remember, as Will Durant said, “We are what we repeatedly do. And therefore, excellence then is not an act but a habit.”This is a great time to get some really good habits. Have a good day, eh? It’s 20 to 10:00. I’m acting as if I’m starting work every day.
