General email usage stats.

I was reading this article on and was very interested in the following:

General email usage

There are numerous estimates of typical email use and email traffic from various sources. Here just a few for you:

  • According to Pew Internet and American Life Project data from April, 2009, 90% of US Internet users have gone online and sent or read email.
  • The same source suggests that 57% do this as part of a typical day.
  • A May 2009 report by technology market research firm The Radicati Group estimates that there are 1.4 billion email users in 2009, expected to rise to 1.9 billion by 2013.
  • The same source suggests that some 247 billion emails are sent each day in 2009.

These stats are amazing. Facebook, Twitter et al don't even get a sniff in with the numbers here.

So why are we so enamored with social media?

Fun is a word that pops into my head. It's fun to keep in touch, to surf the net and find stuff, then have others to share it with. It gives meaning to it. The meaning could be, "No, really I'm not just surfing mindlessly. I am finding interesting [insert your industry or passion here] stuff others are interested in and are following me for."

Yes I know the arguments for using Twitter, I like it and it works for me, but in the last few weeks I have decided to spend more time doing 'Real World' prospecting. So far the results speak for themselves. We are getting far more work from the real world than we are from Twitter.

So I come back to my point, it's fun. I can chat, find stuff I like, meet new people and get the odd client but it hasn't beaten picking up the phone and calling yet.

And if anyone says email marketing is dead please come see me for a clip around the ears. The numbers speak for themselves and think about this, how do these sites grow? Email.

Looking forward to everyones comments.
